I think we all blinked and suddenly we’re into September. I’m not sure how that happened! The year is racing away and it’s important to remember just how much we continue to achieve despite the ongoing challenges of the pandemic.
Helensburgh Waterfront Development
I was lucky enough to visit the Helensburgh Waterfront Development this week to mark its one year construction anniversary. It’s staggering what has been achieved in that time – the main building is structurally complete, the town has new flood defences and all the glazing is in place.
It has taken a massive team effort to get to this point with staff across a number of services working remotely to deliver the project along with our contractors, Heron Bros. Huge congratulations to everyone involved.
The development is already providing a much needed boost to the local economy employing local people and contractors and supporting local businesses.
Podcast
The Waterfront Development is providing essential training across a number of disciplines. For this week’s podcast, I’m joined by three young trainees who are gaining valuable experience working on the development; Francesca Wilson from our cost consultants RLF and Daniel Green, apprentice engineer and Jamie McBride a civil engineering undergraduate.
I also chat with our Regeneration Project Manager, Andrew Collins and Kevin Farrell, Heron Bros Project Manager. You can listen to the podcast on the council website.
Afghan citizens
I’m sure you have all watched the desperate scenes in Afghanistan. We are in discussions with the UK and Scottish Governments and have agreed to resettle a number of citizens. I hope to share more details soon.
One of the parts of my job I really enjoy is meeting new people from across the council and finding out more about their service. Did you know you can also meet your colleagues on MyCouncilWorks in a series of 60 second interviews? This week, get to know Donald Melville, one of our Business Advisors and find out more about his role in the Council and his involvement in the World Skimming Stone Championships!
We would love to hear from more employees so don’t be shy and please get in touch via workingtogether@argyll-but.gov.uk
