Over the last few weeks I’ve been spending a bit of time outside (when the weather permits), starting to establish a vegetable plot alongside a small flower garden. It’s reminded me of how much good results depend on creating the right conditions — preparing the ground, understanding what works together, and accepting that each crop will work to its own timetable.
That same mindset is useful when working with partners across our wider system. This week I’ve met with Public Health, NHS, CalMac, other councils and had constructive discussions with the Accounts Commission. The issues we’re working through are complex and interconnected, and progress increasingly depends on collaboration, trust and a shared understanding of outcomes. Whole‑system working takes patience and sustained effort, but it is essential if we’re to build resilient services for our communities.
I’m hoping for a bit of dry weather to get out in the garden this weekend.
