I had the opportunity to speak at a LGIU (Local Government Information Unit) “Preparing for 2050, what does the year ahead look like for local government” event this week. Colleagues from England, Wales, Ireland, England, Australia and New Zealand came together to talk about the future for local government. I was struck by the similarities amongst us all. The top priorities attendees voted for were –
- Improving the financial sustainability of the sector
- Tackling the housing and homelessness crisis
- Investing and transforming infrastructure and services
These chime very much with what we’re seeing in Argyll and Bute. I was also encouraged by the shared optimism of the group and I loved LGIU’s Chief Executive’s closing statement – “Local Government can save the world”. A sentiment I absolutely share.

Here in Argyll and Bute we are already doing innovative things to help ourselves thrive in the future.
