I go to a vast range of meetings as part of this job, some are definitely more interesting than others, and in some, you really feel like you are involved in making a tangible difference.
The Corporate Parenting Board that I attended this morning is one of those meetings where I leave with a real sense of the difference that teams in the Council, HSCP, Live Argyll, and all the other partner organisations are making to the lives of care experienced young people in the area.
A corporate parent in Scotland is an organisation or individual responsible for the care and support of looked-after children and young people.
Corporate parents:
- Promote the physical, emotional, spiritual, social, and educational development of children and young people,
- Ensure that children have access to safe, nurturing relationships and environments
- Accept responsibility for looked after children and make their needs a priority
- are alert to matters that could negatively impact the wellbeing of children and young people
This morning we heard about some of the great work happening in our childrens’ homes and education but the most uplifting stories are the ones from young people about the difference this is making to their lives.
If you don’t work in education or social work you may think that this area of work isn’t anything to do with you, but it is. Services like housing and skills development have a role in supporting these young people and any service can consider offering work placements and apprenticeships. Or maybe you could offer to be an MCR Pathway Mentor, it only takes an hour a week.

Being a corporate parent definitely warrants a One Council approach. And as they say on the aeroplane, remember to fix your own oxygen mask before helping others, so think about how you look after yourself and your family.
