Like many others, I’ve been finding myself watching the progress of the Artemis II mission this week. Missions to the Moon always seem to capture people’s imagination in a way few other things do, and this one has clearly struck a chord with the public. There’s something about seeing human beings push beyond what’s familiar that reminds us that space flight is still not routine and never should be taken for granted.
The photographs the astronauts have shared have been extraordinary – beautiful, humbling, and a powerful reminder of just how small our daily world can look from a different perspective. They’re the sort of images that make you pause for a moment and reconnect with why big, complex endeavours matter.
It also brought to mind a well-known story from NASA. When President Kennedy was visiting the space centre, he asked a cleaner what his job was. The cleaner replied, “I’m helping to put a man on the Moon.” He wasn’t talking about his job description – he was talking about his purpose and his part in something much bigger than himself.
That story feels very relevant to our One Council principle. Every role, every team, and every individual contribution matters when we’re working towards a shared goal. Whether our work is front-facing, technical, operational or supportive, it all connects. When we see ourselves as part of the same mission, the collective impact is far greater than any single task.
As we move through another busy week, I hope we can keep that sense of shared purpose in mind – and remember that what we do every day contributes to something bigger than any one of us.
