Last week Pippa spoke about the importance of children’s views being heard and this week, I want to say something about a programme that is helping young people across Argyll and Bute achieve, believe in their true potential and increase their overall confidence to help them with their future.
Working with MCR Pathways, we have introduced a mentoring programme which is now running in nine of our ten secondary schools, with the tenth one hopefully joining soon, that matches mentors with young people to help realise their skills and progress to positive destinations. I’ve seen firsthand just some of the positive effects this is having on young people.
Not only do young people get a great deal from meeting their mentor for an hour a week, it also changes the lives of people volunteering. I know that many of you are already mentors and now we’re looking for more people to volunteer.
You really can change a young person’s life by simply listening, encouraging and being there for that hour. You’ll receive ongoing support and training along the way and gain so much from helping our young people. You can request to mentor during your working week for one hour- providing travel to the designated school is not unreasonable.
