Today I want to cover a few topics.
Budget
Yesterday was the most recent meeting of our Policy and Resources Committee and members considered our latest budget outlook for 2026/27. As you’d expect work goes on to prepare for the council setting its budget next year. We won’t know until later than usual what the council’s financial settlement from the Scottish Government will be. The Scottish Government will set their budget on 13th January, and we should get our figures shortly after that.
In addition to planning next year’s budget, we also campaign with other councils through CoSLA, for fair funding for council services. CoSLA, with input from councils, negotiates with the Scottish Government about funding.
The council is inviting communities to get involved and show their support by saying ‘yes’ to fair funding for councils. You can also get involved and your support would be very welcome. We will share the show of support with CoSLA for use as public backing for fair funding.
Mental Health
I also want to highlight that today is World Mental Health Day. 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem at some point in their lives and it’s really important to remove the stigma that can exist around this issue. There are lots of resources on MyCouncilWorks if you or someone you know needs help and support.
Mentoring Young People
You may have heard about our mentoring programme? We work closely with MCR Pathways to help support young people build their confidence and ignite a spark to help them create a positive future. Following the successful rollout of a mentoring scheme across four secondary schools, we’re expanding the scheme in five more schools in 2026 (Tobermory High, Lochgilphead High, Campbeltown Grammar, Tarbert Academy and Islay High) enabling more young people to realise their full potential.
We’re looking for volunteer mentors in these schools. Some of our colleagues are already mentors at Oban High, Rothesay Academy and Dunoon Grammar and I’ve heard firsthand how this not only changes the life of young people but can be incredibly rewarding for mentors too. You don’t need any specific skills, just commitment, empathy, and determination to make a positive impact.
If you would like to find out more about becoming a volunteer mentor, come along to the following information sessions:
Tuesday 14th October 10:00 – 10:45
Thursday 16th October 13:00 – 13:45
Have a lovely weekend.
