CEX update – making a positive difference

Support funding for your council services

This week I have been at the COSLA Conference with the Leader of the Council.

In 2025 we are celebrating 50 years of COSLA (Convention of Scottish Local Authorities).  During this time COSLA has championed the voice of Local Government in Scotland.

As we look ahead to the upcoming Scottish Parliament election the theme for this year’s conference was “The Future of Localism”, exploring how local decision-making and community-driven approaches can support stronger, fairer outcomes for people and places across Scotland.

And the positive difference that the council makes here for local people is being endorsed through the responses we are getting to our call for support for fair funding for services.

I want to share with you just some of the comments that recognise the amazing services you provide and the difference you make to people’s lives:

“Without effective, well staffed council services, society as a whole suffers from education to the environment, roads to refuse and recycling, housing and planning for future needs as well managing the here and now.”

“Local services are vital to allow growth in the local area.”

“Council services are essential to rural locations such as Argyll and Bute and it is vital these are protected with fair funding from Government.”

“Council services are the bedrock, the foundations of our society. Education, transport, waste management, housing, care services for all ages, road infrastructure. And of course crisis response when required.  The list is endless….. “

“In a rural community we rely on the council across many aspects of every day life…Reduction in funding would have an impact on every person living in the authority on daily basis.”

“Council services make a real difference to people’s lives. They are a major employer of skilled professionals and bring staff into the area to enrich our rural communities. I know the dedication of staff who literally worked 24/7 during covid and saved many lives…. Keep your heads up, you are doing a great job!”

I hope this conveys how valued your contribution is.

Pippa
