Voting has taken place for the Kintyre and the Islands Ward 2 by-election. As the Returning Officer for Argyll and Bute, I can announce that Anne Horn is the new Councillor for this ward. Thank you to everyone who worked so hard behind the scenes. Welcome back Councillor Horn.
World Clipper Race
Marine tourism is an important sector across Argyll and Bute that attracts global visitors and helps support our local economy. I’m delighted that this week, Oban featured on the world stage with the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. Not only is this a great sporting occasion but it also provides a much welcomed economic boost to the town and local businesses with thousands of visitors and competitors.
I had the pleasure, earlier this week of meeting some of the teams taking part in this gruelling challenge. I’m proud of the warm welcome Oban has given them and the support of residents, businesses and partners.
As you can imagine, organising an event on this scale takes a huge effort. I want to thank everyone involved from the council. From our street sweepers to car par attendants, colleagues in Economic Development, Catering, Comms, and Roads and Infrastructure and our harbour master and team in Oban.
The atmosphere in the town is great with a food and drink festival highlighting local produce, artisan crafts and workshops including Gaelic taster sessions. If you can, I would highly recommend a visit this weekend before the race leaves on Sunday. To find out what’s happening this weekend visit the Clipper website.
Have a lovely weekend.
Pippa
