AI, bins and data…
Increasing recycling rates to save money, meet climate goals and comply with new government legislation is very much at the top of the council’s agenda. And data that shows exactly where residents are using our recycling services, and to what extent, opens up all sorts of possibilities for the Roads and Infrastructure teams to deliver services.
Maximising useful technology, the council recently trialled AI alongside existing technology on two bin lorries in Mid Argyll, over two recycling cycles. Using Voom AI alongside CCTV and GPS on the vehicles, it was possible to calculate the number of blue bins emptied, and at which location. Voom can also work out the participation rates for recycling services and the average bin weight per household, when combined with the weighbridge data.
Interrogating the data to flag up hot spots where recycling is particularly low also offers opportunity for more focused communications and marketing directed towards those areas where recycling is less prevalent. Full results of the pilot will be known in the new year.
