How can Service Design help us deliver services?

Every day across the council we explore ways in which we can improve what we do, often in very complex and financially difficult circumstances. Service design could help us come up with new solutions or ways of working and make a real difference in our day to day jobs.

What is service design? Generally, we talk about services – either in terms of our organisation structure, such as Commercial Services, Corporate Support Services etc, or in what we provide to our communities. When we talk about service design we’re referring to a particular process, a way of planning, organising, communicating or creating something that helps someone do something. The aim of a service design approach is to make it as easy as possible for a user to interact with whatever it is we’re offering – from paying a bill, accessing road closure information, applying for a place at school, booking an event – the list is endless. The tools in service design can be applied across the whole council to help us deliver what’s needed.

To understand more about service design and the tools that could help us make improvements or solve a problem, there’s a resource available – Service Design – My Council Works

Can you think of an area of your work that could be even better but you’re not sure where to start? Perhaps one of the tools in service design could help.

Access to resources such as this are available to empower you with information and education that can help you do your job and are part of our ongoing transformation to evolve how we work across the council. Take a look and explore what’s available.
