This is integral to our mission and purpose. There are many ways we’re working to achieve this including making sure children’s rights are central to everything we do.
Rights Respecting Schools Award (RRSA) is a UNICEF UK accreditation that recognises the journey that ELCs, primary and secondary schools take to fully embed children’s rights within education. At each stage of the journey, our education settings progress their engagement with rights, Bronze being rights committed, Silver being Rights Aware and at Gold level our school settings can confidently state that they are Rights Respecting.
100% of our schools have registered their interest in completing the RRSA, with only 8 of our schools yet to achieve Bronze and we are confident that we can achieve 100% accreditation within the academic year.
The RRSA is important to us as it develops our learning communities in line with the UNCRC Scottish Government legislation. Staff are informed about the legislation to ensure that they can embed understanding throughout the curriculum as well as ensuring that school policy and procedures embed the rights of the child.
All of the work that is undertaken as part of the accreditation programme raises awareness of rights with children/young people, staff, parents/carers and the broader community. And we are currently developing a team of silver assessors to ensure that we can continue to support the high level of engagement in this award. Many people across the education service have been involved in this programme, focused on our shared mission and purpose to achieve excellence for our children and young people.
