Attracting investment for Argyll and Bute

Argyll and Bute Council has welcomed the news that four projects in the area will benefit from the Scottish Government’s Islands Programme and the Carbon Neutral Islands Fund.

The funding aims to create and safeguard infrastructure projects on islands, with the Scottish Futures Trust providing coordination and advice.

The following projects were successful in Argyll and Bute:Islands Programme

  • Redevelopment of the former Royal Hotel on Bute – £400,000
  • Community Halls Digital Hubs, Colonsay, Jura, Luing and Lismore, £125,000
  • Lighthouse Keepers Cottages Heritage Project, Tiree – £306,050
  • Ulva Landing Craft, Ulva – £40,020

Carbon Neutral Islands Fund

  • Decarbonisation of Islay Community Buildings (phase 2) – £401,843

Council Leader, Councillor Jim Lynch, said: “This funding announcement is fantastic news for Argyll and Bute’s island communities. It will support a range of innovative and meaningful projects—from heritage restoration to digital connectivity and climate action.

“These investments will help strengthen infrastructure, preserve culture, and support our transition to net zero, delivering long-term benefits for residents and visitors alike. These projects reflect the strength and ambition of our communities, and I look forward to seeing the positive impact they will bring.”

George Hanson, Director of George Hanson (Building Contractors) Ltd, who received funding towards the renovation of the Royal Hotel in Rothesay, added: “After over 60 meetings and years of determination, we are thrilled to have secured this funding. We are grateful for the support and commitment shown by those who have worked with us.

“The Royal Hotel has a special place in Rothesay’s history. Bringing it back to life will preserve an important piece of the town’s heritage, create investment in the area and contribute to the wider regeneration that is already underway.”
