What is the difference between Posts and Pages?

Posts are generally used for news updates and galleries on the site. They allow content to be categorised so they fall onto the corresponding pages. For example, the larger schools have a Faculties section so the posts are used to put information about each subject on these pages by choosing the appropriate subject category.

Pages are used for static content across the site, for example, the homepage and about page. Most of the time you will use pages for your content, unless you are posting news updates.

What is the difference between the Classic Editor and editing with Elementor?

If you are making simple text based pages you can just use the classic editor. This will allow you to add text, links and images etc. If you are making more complex pages and would like to display it in columns, embed YouTube videos and generally make the pages more interesting, it is best to use Elementor.

How do I use Elementor to make posts/pages?

Click on the Edit with Elementor button, this will load up the editor.

On the right hand side of the screen there is a button with a + sign. Click on this to add a new section into the page. This will allow you to choose multiple column layouts so you can present information side by side.

Here are some of the options available.

Elementor features

To add an option to the page, click, drag and drop it from the left hand side over to the newly created section on the right. It should have a pink outline around it when it is going into the section.

Make all edits to the content on the left hand side, it will preview on the right.

How do I save a page and make it live?

If you want to save your content, simply click on the Publish button on the top right hand side. Unless it is a post that is set up to go on the site, it won’t appear automatically in the menus until you do that yourself. So even if you are not ready for the page to go live, it can still be published as you go through the editing stages. You can save as draft if you want to make sure it isn’t live. You do this by clicking on the drop down arrow on the publish button and choose Save Draft.

Publish options

To view your page or exit the editor click on the View Page button.

You need to have admin privileges to be able to edit the menu. If you don’t see the option to add to the menu you might need this changing. Contact the Web Team to arrange this.

Firstly go to any page on the website, as if you were a visitor browsing the site. On the top left of the black menu bar you will see the name of the site. Hover over this and a drop down menu will appear. There should be an option for Menus in this list. Click on this.

Menu options

You will now see a list of all the pages and underneath that, posts that have been created on the site. These will be in most recent order. Check the box next to the page you want on the menu.

Add to the menu - example

If you scroll down to the bottom of this list you will see an Add to Menu button.

Add to menu button

Click on this button and your selected items will appear in the menu structure list on the right hand side.

They will appear on the very bottom of the menu list once they are added. Just drag them to where they should be on the menu. You can rename the title if it is too long by clicking on the drop down arrow next to the menu item. You can also remove items from the menu the same way. Once it is positioned correctly remember to click the Save Menu button.

How do I add a post to the site?

If you need to add a post to the site, for news items, galleries or curriculum updates, go to the top black bar and create a new post.

Add in an appropriate title.

On the right hand side there is a categories list, select the category that you need for displaying the post. If you select News, for example, it should sit on the News section of the site when it is published.

Now you can use Elementor to build up the layout on the post. If it is just simple text you can use the Classic Editor that is there by default.

When you have finished adding the content, click on Publish.

If you are adding a gallery to the site, use the Gallery category and then edit with Elementor. Drag across the gallery feature option from the Pro section and drop it onto the right hand side. You can now upload your images using the edit panel on the left hand side.

How do I add documents to the site?

There are two ways to add documents to the site. You can simply add them onto pages using the Media upload option in the editor or some sites have the Download Manager feature set up.

Using the Add Media option

  1.  Go to the page that the document needs to link from. Edit the page.
  2. If using Elementor go into the Text Editor, or add a new Text Editor. On the left hand side the editor will appear.
  3. Use the Add Media button. This will allow you to upload your document.
  4. Click on Insert Media, this will add your document into the page.
  5. You can now change the link text if required.
  6. Save the page.

Using the Download Manager Feature

Handy for larger schools and schools with lots of documents to arrange on the pages.

  1. On the black bar select New – File.
  2. Add the title of your document.
  3. On the right hand side use the button to upload your document.
  4. If using categories, select the appropriate category for the document.
  5. If you need to add a new category let the Web Team know because the documents will not automatically fall on individual pages.
  6. Publish the document.
