Zero tolerance approach to abuse of council staff

The words zero tolerance in red on a white background

Today, Councillors approved a joint statement between the Council and our trade union partners that reaffirms a zero‑tolerance approach to abuse of council employees. This statement sends a clear message that no one should face threatening, abusive, or intimidating behaviour while carrying out vital services for our communities.

Councillors were clear in their support for this approach and in recognising the essential contribution you make every day. The services you deliver are fundamental to life in Argyll and Bute, and your safety and wellbeing are a priority.

This joint statement makes it clear that we will not tolerate, under any circumstances, abuse towards our staff and the consequences of aggressive behaviour could involve legal action, where required.

If you experience any such behaviour while carrying out your duties, please ensure you report it through the appropriate channels so that we can continue to support you.

Joint statement from Argyll and Bute Council and trade union partners

‘Argyll and Bute Council employees deliver services that local communities depend upon every day. Our employees have the right to do that safely, and without fear of aggression.

‘Argyll and Bute Council has a zero-tolerance approach to abuse, including verbal abuse, threats, intimidation, harassment, or physical violence directed towards our employees. Such behaviour is unacceptable in any circumstance and will not be tolerated.

‘Anyone who engages in abusive or aggressive conduct towards council staff may be asked to leave council premises, refused service, or have their access to council officers restricted. Where required, incidents will be reported to the police, and legal action may be taken.

‘Our employees and the services they deliver are key to life in Argyll and Bute. We ask all members of the public to treat our staff with courtesy and respect, for everyone’s benefit.’

Thank you for everything you do for our communities.
