Unpaid Carer’s leave

clasped hands

From 6 April 2024 employees will be entitled to unpaid leave to give or arrange care for a dependant.

We recognise it can be a challenge to balance caring responsibilities with work. As part of our employment deal, we are committed to supporting employees to achieve a healthy balance and welcome the change in legislation that introduces this entitlement. Carer’s leave will now be included in our existing package of arrangements to support employees who have caring commitments and can be used in addition to for example; leave for domestic emergencies, parental leave, critical illness leave, hybrid and flexible working, and other family leave provisions.

Here are details of how to apply for carer’s leave and the guidance on how leave can be taken.

If you have caring responsibilities, and would like to know what support is available, please contact Carers UK/Scotland.
